New Zealand's kiwifruit success started with Chinese seeds
New Zealand turned Chinese kiwifruit seeds into a multi-billion dollar industry, thanks to innovative trellis farming that maximizes yields and global exports.
Kiwifruit vines, originally from China, transformed New Zealand into a global kiwifruit powerhouse. Introduced in the early 1900s, these vigorous plants quickly adapted to the temperate climate. Growers train the vines on vast pergola-style trellises, allowing them to reach up to 10 meters while keeping the fruit accessible. This method maximizes sunlight and improves air circulation, significantly boosting yields. Each vine can produce an impressive 100 kilograms of fruit annually. Today, the kiwifruit industry generates billions in exports, shipping green and golden varieties to over 50 countries.
