The Vjosa is the last wild river in Europe

While most of the continent's waterways have been dammed or diverted, this Balkan river flows entirely unobstructed from its source to the sea.

The Vjosa River flows for over 270 kilometers from the mountains of Greece through the heart of Albania, reaching the Adriatic Sea without a single dam or power plant blocking its path. This makes it a rare ecological relic in a continent where nearly every major waterway has been engineered for industry or energy. Because the river remains untamed, its natural cycles of flooding and sediment movement create a shifting mosaic of gravel bars, islands, and wetlands that support species found nowhere else.
