Geneticists have finally traced the global journey and evolution of the adzuki bean
Recent genomic mapping reveals that the adzuki bean was domesticated twice in separate regions of East Asia, tracing a complex evolutionary path from wild vines to a staple of global cuisine.
Genetic researchers have successfully mapped the complex evolutionary history of the adzuki bean by sequencing the genomes of over 150 different varieties. Their findings show that humans domesticated the bean independently in both China and Japan approximately 3,000 to 5,000 years ago.
