South Korea built a nineteen story research tower underwater

Standing 53 meters tall on a submerged reef, this massive steel outpost is designed to survive 19 meter waves while monitoring the ocean's shifting climate.

Deep in the East Sea, a massive steel structure now stands anchored to a submerged rock reef known as Wangdolcho. Rising from a depth of 23 meters, the Wangdolcho Maritime Science Station reaches a total height of 53 meters, roughly equivalent to a 19 story apartment building. Only the top sections of the five level structure are visible above the waves, while the rest remains submerged to monitor the shifting boundary where cold and warm ocean currents collide.
