Antoni Gaudí was mistaken for a homeless man after his fatal accident

The architect of the Sagrada Família was so poorly dressed when a tram struck him that bystanders did not recognize the man behind Barcelona's most iconic landmarks.

On June 7, 1926, Antoni Gaudí left the construction site of the Sagrada Família to walk to a nearby church for prayer. During the journey, the 73 year old architect was struck and severely injured by a passing tram. Because he carried no identity papers and was dressed in shabby, unkempt clothing, witnesses and medical staff mistook the world famous designer for a homeless man.
