A majority of the workforce can be one gender while earning less overall

While women now hold the majority of jobs in the United States, they continue to earn significantly less than their male counterparts due to deep-seated structural inequalities and occupational segregation.

For only the third time in modern American history, women represent the majority of the total U.S. workforce. This shift follows decades of educational progress, as women have earned most bachelor's degrees since the 1980s. However, numerical dominance has not led to pay equity. In 2025, the gender wage gap actually widened to 19 percent, leaving women earning just 81 cents for every dollar earned by men.
