On Christmas Day in 1971, a small propane explosion in a luxury Seoul hotel sparked a devastating inferno that trapped hundreds of guests and fundamentally changed global high-rise fire safety regulations.

The 22-story Daeyeonggak Hotel was one of the most modern buildings in South Korea when a propane leak in the coffee shop triggered a massive fire. The blaze spread rapidly through the skyscraper because it lacked internal fire walls and used flammable materials in the corridors.
