A simple wooden prototype preceded the stone pillars of Stonehenge

Five kilometers from the world's most famous megalith, archaeologists found two post holes that aligned perfectly with the solstice sun 5,000 years ago.

Long before the massive sarsen stones were hauled into place, prehistoric builders in England were already mastering the geometry of the heavens using much humbler materials. Near the village of Bulford, researchers identified the remains of a monument consisting of just two wooden posts set 120 meters apart. Though the timber has long since rotted away, the pits that held them reveal a sophisticated understanding of the solar cycle.
