Homo erectus used fire nearly two million years ago
Ancient ancestors carried natural flames deep into a South African cave, pushing the known history of human fire use back by 800,000 years.
While humans mastered the ability to start fires roughly 400,000 years ago, our ancestors were opportunistic fire users much earlier. In the Wonderwerk Cave of South Africa, researchers identified burned material dating back between 1.07 and 1.79 million years. These remains suggest that Homo erectus did not just observe natural wildfires caused by lightning, but actively captured and maintained them.
