Long before modern electricity, ancient Persians mastered thermodynamics by building ingenious conical structures called yakhchals to harvest and store ice in the middle of the scorching desert.

As early as 400 BCE, Persian engineers constructed yakhchals, which were massive evaporation coolers featuring a distinctive dome shape. These structures utilized a complex system of wind catchers and underground tunnels to pull heat away from the storage area.
