For years, scientists thought microbes in our bodies outnumbered our own cells ten to one. While early research, like the Human Microbiome Project, popularized this idea of 300 trillion microbes to 30 trillion human cells, newer studies suggest a closer one-to-one ratio. We're still talking about trillions of microbial cells, roughly 39 trillion, living alongside our 38 trillion human cells.
