Learning an instrument stops the brain from shrinking

Older adults who take up music in their seventies can halt the physical decay of brain regions responsible for memory and movement.

As the human brain ages, two specific regions called the putamen and the cerebellum typically begin to shrink and lose activity. This physical decline is a primary driver of fading working memory and reduced motor control in seniors. However, researchers at Kyoto University found that these areas are uniquely responsive to the demands of playing a musical instrument, even when the habit is picked up very late in life.
