Ancient Mesopotamian jars, dubbed the Baghdad Battery, might be the world's earliest batteries, dating back over 2,000 years. Discovered in 1936, these clay vessels contain a copper cylinder and an iron rod. When filled with an acidic liquid like vinegar, replicas generate a small electric current, estimated at 0.5 to 2 volts.
