Ancient Persians did not invent chess

Chess originated in ancient India, but Persians refined it into Shatranj, using the game as a crucial tool for military strategy and leadership training.

While often credited with its creation, ancient Persians did not invent chess. The game evolved from Chaturanga, an Indian game from the 6th century CE, which represented the four divisions of an army. When Chaturanga reached the Sassanid Persian Empire, it was adapted into Shatranj, closely resembling modern chess.
