A heart implant allows athletes to survive cardiac arrest
Danish footballer Christian Eriksen returned to professional sports after a life-saving device was placed in his chest to monitor and restart his heart.
In 2021, Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest during a Euro 2020 match against Finland. While such an event often ends an athletic career, Eriksen was fitted with an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator, or ICD. This small, battery-powered device is a specialized type of pacemaker designed to monitor heart rhythms constantly and deliver an electric shock if it detects a life-threatening arrhythmia.
