Chinese leaders rarely visit North Korea

Despite their deep historical ties, a Chinese head of state once went nearly a decade without setting foot in Pyongyang during a period of shifting alliances.

The relationship between China and North Korea is often described as being as close as lips and teeth, yet the physical presence of China's top leadership in Pyongyang has been surprisingly rare. Following the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and South Korea in 1992, the frequency of high level meetings plummeted. After President Yang Shangkun visited North Korea in 1992, it took approximately nine years for another Chinese head of state to make the trip.
