A single saguaro cactus can hold a bathtub of water

To survive years of drought, this desert giant transforms into a massive hydraulic reservoir, expanding its pleated skin to hold enough liquid to fill a standard household tub.

A mature saguaro is less of a plant and more of a living water battery. While most vegetation maintains a rigid structure, this cactus features an accordion-like exterior that allows its trunk to physically swell as it drinks. After a heavy desert rain, a single specimen can absorb over 700 liters of water, increasing its fresh weight until it is nearly 90 percent liquid. To keep from collapsing under this immense internal pressure, the plant relies on a skeleton of woody ribs and internal tissues packed with a specialized sugary slime called mucilage, which holds onto water molecules with incredible grip.
