Data centers use emergency engine loopholes to bypass pollution laws

Massive AI computer clusters are burning natural gas at 2,500 degrees, releasing invisible toxins into local neighborhoods while dodging the strict oversight required for traditional power plants.

To keep pace with the massive energy demands of artificial intelligence, tech firms are installing rows of gas turbines that run at nearly half the efficiency of a standard power plant. These machines, such as those used at the xAI Colossus facility, are technically classified as emergency generators. This label allows them to bypass the Clean Air Act's pre-construction permits, provided they operate for fewer than 500 hours a year.
