Milan uses mountain winds to chill its own valley
While the Mediterranean sun usually warms Italy in April, a fierce wind from the Adriatic Sea can plunge Milan into a deep, unseasonal freeze.
Even as spring temperatures should be climbing toward 18 degrees Celsius, Milan often finds itself trapped in a geographic icebox. The culprit is the Bora, a violent wind that funnels cold air from the Adriatic Sea over 300 kilometers inland. These gusts can reach speeds of 80 kilometers per hour, effectively pushing a wall of Arctic air into the Po Valley.
