Turkey maintains a standing force of 425,000 active troops, a figure so large it exceeds the combined armies of France and Germany by roughly 150,000 soldiers. This massive scale is anchored by an arsenal of 3,000 tanks, dwarfing the United Kingdom's entire fleet. While most NATO allies transitioned to small, voluntary professional forces after the Cold War, Turkey preserved its tradition of mandatory service, requiring every male citizen to serve between six and twelve months.
