Unlike most criminological theories that ask what causes crime, Travis Hirschi’s control theory asks why most people *don't* commit it. He identified four 'social bonds'—attachment, commitment, involvement, and belief—that act as restraints on our natural impulses toward deviance. When these bonds are weak, an individual is free to pursue criminal shortcuts without guilt.
