To solidify this new era, the nation enthroned the 8th Jebtsundamba Khutughtu, a high-ranking spiritual lama, as the Khagan or 'Holy King' of Mongolia. This unique blend of religious and political authority was intended to unite the various Mongol tribes under a single, sacred identity.
