The 1899 Battle of Magersfontein saw a small force of Boer farmers crush the British Empire's elite troops, demonstrating how smokeless powder and long-range rifles had rendered traditional frontal charges suicidal.

During the Second Boer War in 1899, British Lord Methuen attempted a traditional night march to break the siege of Kimberley. He was met by Boer fighters who had pioneered a revolutionary tactic: instead of holding the high ground, they dug concealed trenches at the base of the hills.
