In 1943, Lebanon gained independence after its leaders were released from a French prison

Lebanon's path to sovereignty reached a dramatic climax in 1943 when a national uprising forced French colonial authorities to release the country's imprisoned leaders and recognize their independence.

Although Lebanon was promised independence in 1941, the French Mandate authorities initially refused to relinquish control. The situation boiled over in 1943 when the French arrested the newly elected Lebanese president and cabinet members.
