The fall of Vukovar in 1991 marked the end of a relentless 87-day siege, turning the devastated city into an enduring symbol of Croatian resilience during the Yugoslav Wars.

The 1991 Battle of Vukovar saw a small force of Croatian defenders hold out against the heavily armed Yugoslav People's Army for nearly three months. By the time the city capitulated on November 18, it had been reduced to ruins by hundreds of thousands of shells, becoming the first major European city largely destroyed since World War II.
