The United States Marine Corps was famously founded in a Philadelphia tavern in 1775

The elite United States Marine Corps traces its storied lineage back to a crowded Philadelphia barroom where the first recruits were enlisted over mugs of ale in 1775.

Before the United States was even a sovereign nation, the Continental Congress authorized the formation of two battalions of Marines at Tun Tavern. Robert Mullan, the tavern's owner and the first captain of the Marines, used his establishment as the primary recruiting station for the bold 'leathernecks' who would serve on land and at sea.
