Under the cover of darkness, Japanese forces executed a stealthy river crossing that caught the Qing dynasty off guard and fundamentally shifted the balance of power in East Asia during the late nineteenth century.
In October 1894, General Yamagata Aritomo led the Imperial Japanese Army in a daring covert operation across the Yalu River. By constructing secret pontoon bridges, Japanese troops bypassed Chinese defenses to launch a surprise assault on the Hushan fortifications.
