After years of post-war tension, the citizens of the Saar region took to the polls in 1955 to choose their national identity, ultimately rejecting French influence to rejoin West Germany.
In 1955, the people of the coal-rich Saar region voted in a landmark referendum to determine their political future. Following World War II, the territory was a French protectorate, and France hoped the residents would vote for independence or continued French ties.
