Komodo dragons kill with venom, not just bacteria
Komodo dragons, the largest lizards, use potent venom to rapidly incapacitate massive prey, challenging old assumptions and showcasing nature's deadly efficiency.
Komodo dragons, the world's largest lizards, were long thought to kill prey with septic bites. However, a 2009 study revealed their true weapon: specialized venom glands. These glands produce a potent cocktail of toxins, including anticoagulants and hypotensive agents, which rapidly weaken large animals like deer and water buffalo. This venom allows the dragon to immobilize and consume its massive quarry without a prolonged struggle. Delivering 4-5 milliliters of venom, this strategy enables Komodo dragons to eat up to 80 percent of their body weight in a single meal, a crucial adaptation for survival in their harsh habitats.
