The Nazca Lines are giant desert art only seen from above

Ancient Nazca people etched enormous animal figures into Peru's desert, creating mysterious artworks so vast they are fully visible only from an aerial view.

Etched into Peru's desert floor, the ancient Nazca Lines feature hundreds of massive animal shapes, like hummingbirds and monkeys, some stretching 300 meters long. Created by the Nazca people between 500 BCE and 500 CE, these geoglyphs were made by removing dark pebbles to reveal lighter soil beneath. While some smaller lines are visible from hills, the full animal forms are truly comprehensible only from the air. This aerial perspective, unavailable to their creators, makes their purpose a fascinating mystery, possibly linked to astronomy or rituals. Discovered by pilots in the 1920s, these remarkable designs span over 450 square kilometers.
