Warmer oceans fuel stronger hurricanes each year
Climate change is heating ocean surfaces, providing more energy for hurricanes to grow stronger and more destructive, increasing risks for coastal communities globally.
Hurricanes gain their immense power from the heat and moisture in warm ocean waters. As global warming steadily increases sea surface temperatures, these storms are intensifying more readily. For instance, oceans have warmed by about 0.13 degrees Celsius per decade, providing extra thermal energy for tropical cyclones to form and strengthen.
