Tires account for half of all environmental microplastics
Every car journey acts like a giant eraser on the planet, shedding microscopic rubber fragments that now dominate plastic pollution in many ecosystems.
Driving a car or riding a bus is effectively like dragging a massive eraser across the Earth. As tires rotate, the friction against the road sheds microscopic slivers of rubber, synthetic polymers, and chemical additives. These fragments are so pervasive that tire wear particles account for nearly half of the microplastics found in both land and water systems.
