The Renaissance rackett, a unique woodwind, packed a seven-foot-long bore into a two-foot instrument using intricate internal curves. This German innovation, from the late 16th century, produced surprisingly deep bass notes, down to 60 Hz, in a compact form perfect for chamber music. Its folded design allowed portability without sacrificing rich tone, making it a favorite alongside shawms and cornetts until the early 1700s.
