A sculptor studied moviegoers to carve presidential heads
To capture the perfect likeness for over 150 massive sculptures, David Adickes spent years observing the backs of heads in darkened theaters.
The sculptor David Adickes spent more than a decade obsessed with a single perspective: looking a giant in the eye. After a road trip past Mount Rushmore, he became determined to create a series of 18 foot tall presidential busts that viewers could experience at ground level. To ensure the anatomical accuracy of his work, Adickes was known to frequent movie theaters, where he would sit and stare at the backs of elderly men's heads to study the realistic contours of aging skin and bone.
