Group pressure can warp your perception of reality

Pioneering studies reveal how powerful group pressure can be, causing individuals to conform to majority opinions even when they know those opinions are wrong.

In the 1950s, psychologist Solomon Asch showed how easily group pressure sways individual judgment. Participants in his experiments were asked to match line lengths, a simple task. Yet, when confederates deliberately gave wrong answers, about 75% of real participants conformed at least once, even though the correct answer was obvious. When alone, they made almost no errors.
