Our galaxy's black hole periodically eats stars

The Milky Way's central supermassive black hole, Sagittarius A*, is thought to periodically tear apart and devour stars, unleashing spectacular cosmic outbursts.

At the heart of the Milky Way, the supermassive black hole Sagittarius A* occasionally devours stars. When a star strays too close, its immense gravity stretches and shreds it in a spectacular event called a tidal disruption. The stellar remains then spiral inward, heating up and emitting powerful bursts of radiation as they are consumed.
