As the gas giant grew, its massive gravity acted as a barrier, preventing essential phosphorus and nitrogen from drifting into the outer reaches of space.

The chemical recipe for life on Earth was not delivered from the far reaches of the galaxy. Instead, it was likely locked into the inner solar system by the rapid growth of Jupiter. More than 4.5 billion years ago, as the solar system formed from a swirling disk of gas and dust, the elements phosphorus and nitrogen were in constant motion.
