Light sheet microscopes can film seizures in three dimensions
By using a thin sheet of light instead of a single beam, researchers can capture brain-wide electrical storms in zebrafish at four volumes per second.
Seizures are incredibly fast electrical events that race through the brain in seconds, making them difficult to document in detail. Traditional confocal microscopes use a single point of light to scan a sample, a process that is often too slow to capture rapid 3D movement and can damage delicate living tissue through intense laser exposure.
