Over the last thirty years, the migration cycle of Japan's Nagara River ayu has shifted as rising ocean temperatures accelerate their return to freshwater.

The ayu, or sweetfish, is a cultural icon of Japan's Nagara River, famous for a traditional fishing method that uses trained cormorants to catch them. These fish follow a strict migratory life cycle, hatching in the river before heading to the ocean for the winter. However, research from Nagano University shows that the time these fish spend at sea has shortened by approximately twelve days over the last three decades.
