A marlin bill can pierce the human spinal canal
While attempting to release a 60-pound white marlin, a fisherman was struck by the fish's bill, which broke off and wedged into the base of his skull.
The white marlin is known for its elongated, spear-like bill, a weapon typically used to stun prey. However, the force of a jumping marlin is enough to drive this biological spear through human bone. In a rare medical case, a 31 year old fisherman in Louisiana was struck in the mouth by a marlin he was trying to release. The impact was so powerful that the tip of the fish's bill snapped off and traveled through the back of his throat.
