A robotic rover crossed sixteen miles of desert alone
NASA engineers tested a self-driving prototype that navigated 26 kilometers of jagged rock and sand to prove it could survive without human help.
In the desolate expanse of the Colorado Desert in Southern California, a small four wheeled robot completed a grueling 26 kilometer trek. Known as ERNEST, or the Exploration Rover for Navigating Extreme Sloped Terrain, the prototype was designed to prove that machines can handle the solar system's most unforgiving landscapes without constant guidance from Earth.
