When director Andrew Ahn and cinematographer Ki Jin Kim were developing the 2016 independent film Spa Night, they decided that the movie's entire visual language should hinge on the specific energy of its lead actor. While reviewing audition tapes, Kim made a definitive technical choice: the film would be shot entirely handheld if one candidate were cast, but locked to a tripod if Joe Seo won the role.
