Ancient Egyptian eye makeup traveled to Roman Britain
Chemical analysis of a 2,000-year-old glass flask found in York suggests that Roman elites imported luxury cosmetics from the Nile.
Archaeologists in York have identified traces of kohl, the iconic black eye makeup of ancient Egypt, inside a small glass vessel unearthed in Northern England. The blue-green iridescent flask had been held in storage for over 40 years before modern testing revealed its original contents. This discovery provides a rare physical link between the far-flung edges of the Roman Empire and the specialized cosmetic industries of North Africa.
