While medical textbooks often focus on physical complications like hemorrhage or infection, the landscape of maternal mortality is shifting. In Colorado, accidental overdose has emerged as the second-leading cause of death for individuals during pregnancy and the first year after birth. Between 2016 and 2020, 33 people in the state lost their lives to overdose within this critical window.
