A massive deep-sea graveyard holds five-million-year-old whale fossils
Located in the Diamantina fracture zone, this underwater necropolis is the oldest and deepest whale fall site ever discovered by researchers.
In the southeastern Indian Ocean, a vast underwater canyon known as the Diamantina fracture zone serves as a final resting place for hundreds of prehistoric giants. This site, located roughly 1,000 kilometers west of Perth, is the oldest, deepest, and most extensive whale graveyard ever recorded. Some of the fossilized remains found there have been resting on the seafloor for more than 5 million years.
