A common joint supplement may accelerate Alzheimer's disease
While glucosamine is often used to treat arthritis, new research suggests it can increase the risk of dementia progression and mortality in certain patients.
Glucosamine is an amino sugar used by more than 40 million Americans every year to manage joint pain and arthritis. While the supplement is generally considered safe for healthy adults, it appears to have a different effect on those already experiencing cognitive decline. Patients with mild cognitive impairment who take glucosamine are 25 percent more likely to progress to full Alzheimer's disease than those who do not.
