Instead of landing on the Moon, the next Artemis crew will remain in low Earth orbit to practice docking with lunar landers.

The Artemis III mission marks a significant shift in the timeline for returning humans to the lunar surface. While originally envisioned as a landing mission, the flight is now designed as a high stakes dress rehearsal in low Earth orbit. A crew of four astronauts will spend their time testing the complex docking procedures required to connect the Orion spacecraft with one or two lunar landing vehicles.
