Artemis III astronauts will not actually land on the moon
Despite being the third phase of NASA's lunar return program, this mission will remain in Earth's orbit to test docking procedures and new spacesuits.
The Artemis program was originally designed as a three-stage ladder to the lunar surface. Artemis I sent an uncrewed capsule around the moon, and Artemis II is scheduled to carry a crew on a similar loop. However, mission planners have modified the third installment to address the technical gap between flying past the moon and actually walking on it.
