While China is often viewed as North Korea's primary benefactor, it has previously used its seat on the United Nations Security Council to vote for six separate rounds of extreme economic sanctions. These measures, supported in 2016 and 2017, were designed to isolate the North Korean regime and force it back to the negotiating table by cutting off critical trade and revenue streams.
