Operation Neptune used seven thousand ships for the D-Day invasion
The naval phase of the Normandy landings required nearly 200,000 personnel to manage a massive armada that included vessels resembling welded steel shoeboxes.
The invasion of Normandy, known as Operation Neptune, remains the largest amphibious assault in history. To transport armies across the English Channel, the Allies assembled a fleet of 7,016 ships and major landing craft. Approximately 79 percent of these vessels were British or Canadian, and together they carried 195,701 naval personnel into the conflict.
